Safe SCS

SCS is currently collaborating with all local law enforcement to update our security policy and procedures. We aim to standardize our operational vocabulary between SCS and local law enforcement. 

• A HOLD is called when there is a situation inside the building where the school or emergency responders must keep students and staff away from the incident. During a hold, students and staff may continue normal classroom activities inside their hold area.
• SHELTERING provides refuge for students and staff inside the school building during weather, hazardous material, or other similar emergencies. Students and staff move to designated shelter areas that maximize their safety. SHELTER is used when an evacuation would place individuals at risk.
• A SECURE is called when conditions exist outside of the school building that could potentially present a threat to the safety and security of the students and staff. When the school is SECURE, students and staff can continue normal classroom activities including transitioning in the school, but no visitors are allowed in the building.
• AN EVACUATION is necessary when it is determined that conditions outside of the building are safer than those inside the building. In situations when the weather is inclement or staff and students will be required to evacuate for an extended period, a relocation should be initiated in place of an evacuation.
• A LOCKDOWN is used when there is an armed or dangerous intruder in the building or a serious/volatile situation exists that would jeopardize the safety of the staff and students. During a LOCKDOWN, staff members should remain locked in their rooms or evacuate the building if they determine that are not able to get into a locked room, and if evacuating the building is the safest for their students.

Per the state of Illinois, we are required to perform three fire drills, one bus evacuation drill, one tornado drill, and one lockdown drill. Beginning in September, Schaumburg Christian performs these drills throughout the school year. The Safety Team reviews the drills to ensure everyone understands his or her role. 

Schaumburg Christian believes in cultivating a Christian environment where the love of Christ is evident towards all who are in our facility. That begins by cultivating a positive, Christian relationships with our staff, students, and families. Our hope is that each individual has a positive interaction on our campus. 

Establishing relationships with our staff, students, and families allows us to create a safe environment where individuals feel safe and comfortable communicating about potential issues. Still, we understand that sometimes that isn't always the case. We encourage the motto, "If you see something, say something." We have created a Safety and Bullying form where individuals can report any conduct that presents an unsafe environment or concerning behavior. Please reinforce this with your children by informing them it is okay to report anything suspicious activities or concerns.

Schaumburg Christian School has one School Resource Officer on site. Officer Mike Dailly is a full-time detective with the Schaumburg Police Department. His primary goal is maintain the safety and security of our school while cultivating positive relationships with our students, staff, and families. 

We understand the importance of keeping our families informed during an emergency. Please understand that our priority is the safety and well-being of our staff and students while communicating with safety personnel. SCS uses our Redikker SIS to communicate with our families. Please ensure your information up to date in your parent portal. 

Depending on the type of possible emergency, Schaumburg Christian School may require an off-site reunification location. We will be diligent in this process to ensure all the students are transported there safely before we provide a location to our parents. We will provide parents specific instructions regarding reunification. 

Schaumburg Christian believes in the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being for all our students, staff, and families. SCS has several certified ACBC Biblical Counselors on-site. The Biblical Counseling Center has offices on-site for our students, staff, and families.  

In the event of a school emergency, the SCS and Bethel administration will work with local police and fire department to ensure the safety of everyone in the facility. We are committed to providing ongoing communication and updates as information becomes available to us. Stay alert for text messages, phone calls, emails, and website updates. We understand that during an emergency, many of our students will attempt to communicate with their parents/guardians. If this takes place, please remain calm and reassuring. Encourage the students to follow the directions of school staff and law enforcement. 

As a school family, our goal is to ensure our students are safe. We understand your desire to come to the school during an emergency. However, arriving before the scene is secure can interfere with the emergency response and possibly put you in danger. To help us ensure that emergency response personnel have access to the facility, please stay away. Coming to Schaumburg Christian may cause unexpected traffic which could hinder the response efforts. Families should not come to the facility until the administration communicates when and where students may be picked up. If the reunification location is off-site, the school will bus students to the off-site reunification location. 

To help SCS administration communicate with the emergency response teams, please do not call the school. This will allow the response teams to have uninterrupted communication throughout the response efforts. The administration will communicate any information as soon as it is available. 

Emergency personnel will be dealing with the situation. Calling 911 or the police department may cause traffic on the phones lines impacting other local emergencies. Calling about the situation at school will only take away from dispatchers from effectively dealing with other emergencies. This could also interrupt the communication between the school and emergency response teams.

Only call 911 or the police department if you have information regarding the emergency.

In the case of a facility evacuation, SCS will follow a reunification plan that ensures students are safely returned to their families. During the reunification, only the parents/guardians or emergency contacts listed in PlusPortals will be allowed to pick up the child(ren). 

• Bring a valid form of ID
• Follow signage and parking directions 
• Complete any necessary forms 
• Provide ID to staff
• Be patient 

Students will be safely escorted to their families.
