In observance of national reading week, the first grade classes at SCS had many guest readers visit in order to promote and encourage reading development. Stories such as Arthurs Thanksgiving and the Rainbow Fish were read, much to the delight of the students. A special thank you is extended to all of those who volunteered and made this a memorable time for our students.

At SCS, starting in kindergarten students are required to be able to read in order to graduate. Students further develop and hone these vital skills in first grade though continued study of phonics and practical training. Schaumburg Christian School understands the importance of being able to not only read, but to understand what is being read. Therefore, comprehension is also developed along with verbal reading skills as part of its core curriculum.

Parents can also play an important role in developing reading skills by simply reading exciting stories and adventures to their child and by having their child read to them. Developing a love for reading helps motivate students to increase their reading skills and will go a long ways towards academic success.

The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat

posted: Nov 05, 2008

The past 2 weekends have been busy for the student athletes at SCS. We experienced both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Let’s take a look at the highlights of both our soccer and volleyball teams.

The Junior High guy’s soccer team soundly defeated a tough opponent (3-0) to advance to the championship game by out-playing and out-scoring a much bigger team. At halftime of the championship game, they were down 1-0. Our guys played hard, never giving up, but ultimately lost to an older, more experienced team, 4-0. This team should be poised to go all the way next year in Coach Chai’s second year as coach.

Junior High Volleyball Victory - junior high volleyball team...

After winning every single match in the pool play part of the volleyball tournament, our girls Junior High volleyball team defeated Marquette in order to advance to the finals. It was a thrilling championship match that went to the last serve in 2 of the 3 games played. In the first game, the score was tied at 14-14. SCS served the ball out of bounds and South Side won, 15-14. The junior high girls’ second game was a win of 15-10. That set the stage for an electric game 3 which would decide the new state champ. The stands were filled with loud cheering fans and they had plenty to cheer about, including another 14-14 tie which was going to be decided on the final serve. This time, South Side served. It seemed that the entire gymnasium held its collective breath. As in the first game, this serve also went out of bounds, giving Schaumburg the win and the state championship at the same time. We look forward to next year and the opportunity to defend our title.

Varsity Volleyball Player Bumping - varsity volleyball athlete...

On the varsity level, our girl’s volleyball team played well in front of packed crowds, winning the first 4 games they played in pool play. They lost their next 2 to eventual state champions Ridgewood and finished 4-2, but were able to advance to the semi-final bracket. They had to play Ridgewood again to advance to the championship game, but were unable to find a way. This put them in the position of playing for third place on Saturday. They went to the wire in the first game, losing 28-26 to North Love, and eventually finished fourth overall to end the season. With almost a completely senior dominated team, next year’s team will look decidedly different, but is already looking to compete for the championship.

Varsity Soccer Player in Action - conqueror athlete controlling...

The Varsity guy’s soccer team began the state tournament as the number 1 seed, and showed itself worthy of that ranking by convincingly defeating Lake County 6-1 to advance to the championship game. The guys continued their dominance by getting on the board in the first 15 minutes of the game to take a 1-0 edge, scoring the first goal off an amazing header by Daniel Martinez that had been crossed from the right wing by Kyler Mowry. SCS held the lead until late in the second half. During the second half, SCS just missed putting another 2 goals in the back of the net. North Love never gave up, and knotted the game at 1-1 about 10 minutes before regulation ended. That set the stage for a sudden death scenario. In overtime, taking their cue from the first goal that SCS scored, North Love crossed from the same right side and one of their forwards headed the ball into the SCS goal to give them the win and the championship. While our SCS guys played hard and could have won, finishing as runner up leaves the team with a sense of unfinished business that will have to be taken care of next year.

Traffic and Construction Update

posted: Oct 03, 2008

School has just reached the second month and all classes and schedules are running according to plan.  The addition of the new parking lot with the new entrance onto Pleasant Drive has been a tremendous help in the overall morning and afternoon traffic routines.  There are 2 items of note that I would like to draw to everyone’s attention:  parking on Pleasant Drive and traffic on Roselle Road.

As was mentioned in our orientation meetings in August, we ask all families to use the appropriate parking lot when it is necessary to enter one of the buildings.  We have had several concerns voiced this year regarding cars that park on Pleasant.  The reasons for this concern are obvious – parking on Pleasant Drive crowds the road for everyone, causes a potentially unsafe visibility situation, and can impede access to fire hydrants.  We ask that everyone please use our established parking lots when it is necessary to enter the buildings.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Construction on Roselle Road has continued since the end of the summer.  Sometimes it seems an eternity before they are complete with one section, but one only has to look with a discerning eye to find that progress is being made.  For up-to-date information regarding the progress on the Roselle Road construction visit http://www.ci.schaumburg.il.us/vos.nsf/schaumburg/CurrentConstructionProjects .  Once you have accessed this website, choose the link Roselle Road – Patching and Resurfacing to learn more.  As always, drive safely and please be alert to any children that are in the area.
